Hello World!

Hello World!

This is my blog. Not only that, but it's an extension of what I post on twitter. It contains my personal commentary regarding the posts I make, provides a more in depth explanation of what I posted and why I posted it. It's a hub for all of my programming escapades, and the central headquarters for everything that I deem worthy of posting about.

SEMI Update

After working a bit more on SEMI, I managed to create a working shop with buttons and powerups and pills and money and stuff. Here's an example of how it looks and how it's working so far. I used a simple powerup & debuff combo that would be noticeable. This pill increases speed at the cost of a smaller jump height.

Showing off the money management system, shop system, and the powerup & debuff combo system. So, basically, showing off a bunch of systems.

The SEMI project

Side Effects May Include (or SEMI for short) is a project I have been working on for a while. Essentially, it's your typical shooting game, but with a twist. With every upgrade and every power up, you also recieve an undesired effect on the side, similar to real life medicine.

These effects can be anything ranging from a simple issue you have to deal with, such as reduced health, or it can be an entire game changer, such as changing the perspective of the game itself! Of course, this game is still in development and it isn't even at a playable state yet. I just wanted to explain the idea behind it.

Here's what I have so far...

A character with 4 weapons!

A working Ammunition and Weapon swapping system!

Player and Enemy health bars, basic AI and enemy spawnpoints!

A nearly almost decent death animation!

An empty shop with buttons that do absolutely nothing!

If you aren't completely sold on the idea yet, I also have...

A HUGE list of potential stuff I want to do with it!

So, What are you waiting for? Sit at the edge of your seat in anticipation
of more info about this game! It might be worth it!

Also note: I'm terrible at advertising.

Oneiron

So, after realizing I needed to learn how to program better than I currently was, I decided to take it to extremes and learn how to do hard coding with C#. Thus I began a journey that would lead me to complete Oneiron, which is the Greek word for dream. The more you play through the different scenarios, the more you begin to understand these strange worlds you build in your subconscious.

A typical screen showing the outcome of one of the choices you made

Description:

You can't understand it, nor do you want to understand it. It's an addiction, an
addiction to dreams. Journey through your dreams to discover who or what is
trapping you within your subconscious. Perhaps you will learn something about
yourself.
This game plays out like a Choose your own adventure book, without the book.
It's an entirely text-based game, so you will have to read in order to get the full
effect of the game.

You may play the game here if you so desire: Link

Oneiron is now located on itch.io! Check it out here:

An Easter Poem

I know this isn't related to game development in the least. But, I did say I would post whatever I deem worthy of posting about, so here it is. This is a free-verse poem about Easter that I wrote in the middle of the night.

The most powerful word

Love
A simple four letter word
Is it meaningless?
Is it inutile?
Is it a jumble of letters scrawled on a page
To sit and be forgotten?
No!
For it was this word that caused a great king to step down from his throne
These four letters sent someone innocent
Someone without fault
Someone perfect
To die a sinners death
To be nailed to a tree
He died to keep this word alive
To prove what it could do
He sank to the depths of the world
And waged war against death
He fought this battle for three days
Then, this word shook the foundations of the earth!
It rolled away the entrance to a burial ground and raised this man up again!
The word shouted to the world
And the heavens above
Look what I can do!
I can move the mountains
I can cause the seas to rage!
I can tear heavy fabric to shreds!
Yet, look at me!
See that I choose you!
Why do you run from such power
When I will never use it to harm you?
Why do you deny my existence
When you see evidence of me every day?
Why do you try to disprove me?
Why do you hide?
I am Love!
The most powerful word in the world!
Others call me
King of kings
Lord of lords
Wonderful Counselor
Healer of nations
The Lamb of God
The Way
The Truth
The Life
Savior
The Word made flesh
Cornerstone
And the Son of God
But you may call me...
Jesus Christ

The 30 day dev challenge

A little while after I posted Off the Wall, I noticed some games had #30daydev in the description. Curious, I decided to take a look. I discovered a challenge to create one game every day for 30 days. I took up the challenge, but quickly gave it up after realizing how much work I had to put into programming, design, art, and music. I also noticed that these games were not as good as I was hoping, due to the time crunch.

Mt first 30 day dev game, appropriately named {(One)}
You can play it here: http://gamejolt.com/games/arcade/one/35708/

The second game - [Black]
You can play it here: http://gamejolt.com/games/platformer/black/35792/

The third and final game - Generic Space Shooter
Destroy the flying saucers to win money!

I added a shop this time!

Let the insanity commence with Off the Wall!

What would a developer's blog be without games? To remedy that situation, I shall showcase the first game I ever posted online. Introducing Off the Wall! A game that has absolutely no purpose whatsoever. Programmed in Stencyl, this game started out as a simple project, was put aside for a while to focus on a different, more involved game (which I still haven't finished), and then ended up becoming the first game I had ever actually completed.

Description:
If you came here looking for a game that makes sense, you will not find it here. You will instead find meatball cannons, zombies, block people, inverted gravity zones, and a few sandwiches. These are just a few of the ridiculous things you will encounter in this bizarre world.

If you desire to play the game, you may play it on GameJolt. If you do, be sure to express what you think of it in the comments section on GameJolt. You may also rate it if you like.
